Pik Palace Shahdag Azerbaijan
Flight time 3h to Baku with FlyDubai
Overall travel time 6h including shuttle bus to hotel
Time difference none
For our first winter adventure with our two young children (then 2 and 4 years old), we chose the Pik Palace in Shahdag, Azerbaijan's largest mountain resort. Nestled in the breathtaking Caucasus Mountains, the Pik Palace is one of three beautiful resorts, each offering shared amenities and entertainment options. While it's not the most budget-friendly choice, the value is undeniable. Although our little ones weren’t quite ready to hit the slopes, we found plenty of indoor and outdoor activities to keep us entertained, making it a truly memorable family holiday. Yes, winter vacations with kids are a bit more challenging than their summer counterparts, but the joy and adventure have already got us thinking about our next trip.
Our journey began with a 3-hour flight to Baku via flyDubai, followed by a scenic 3-hour shuttle bus ride to the resort. As we wound our way up the mountain roads, the sight of the Pik Palace around the bend was a welcome one after our travels. And with no time difference between Dubai and Azerbaijan, the kids adjusted seamlessly—a big plus for any parent.
The resort greeted us with timeless luxury, offering spacious accommodations with stunning views of the mountains and ski slopes. Despite the language barrier, the staff’s warmth and hospitality made us feel right at home. While the crisp winter air called to the skiers and sledders, we found the resort's interiors to be a cozy, inviting retreat. A standout for our family was the expansive indoor and outdoor pool, and the serene sauna—a peaceful escape in the mornings and a lively hub in the afternoons.
Exploring Azerbaijani cuisine for the first time was a delightful surprise, with its rich and flavorful dishes. Breakfast at the buffet restaurant was a treat, offering a tempting array of options, and our evenings were spent sampling the different restaurants across the three resorts. Highlights included Manzere Restaurant, with its breathtaking views, and Aspen Steak House, where we enjoyed perfectly cooked steaks in an alpine setting. The kids especially loved the BBQ dinner under the stars—a magical dining experience with our own fire pit. And for those with a sweet tooth, the Chocolate Patisserie Café was irresistible, offering treats that brought out the kid in all of us.
The resort offered a variety of activities for every taste, from skiing to exploring the snowy landscape. Onsite ski rentals and English-speaking instructors made it easy for everyone to join in the fun, no matter their skill level. With 28 slopes ranging from gentle to thrilling, the resort provided excitement amidst stunning natural beauty. Other activities, like coaster rides and ice skating (weather permitting), added to the enchantment of our winter getaway.
Azerbaijan's diverse climate means there's something special to enjoy in every season, and Shahdag offers captivating experiences all year long.
The convenience of this top-notch ski resort, just a 3-hour flight from Dubai, makes it a fantastic alternative to Europe’s often crowded destinations.
Looking back, I’d suggest packing some lighter clothing along with your winter gear. The resort’s cozy interiors provide a welcome break from the cold, especially during meals.
